INTRODUCTION

ABOUT THE RECIPE

Okay, I had a wild idea: what if we could turn oil into a vibrant blue using spirulina? Spoiler alert – it didn’t quite work as planned! I was hoping for this gorgeous blue hue to add some pizzazz to my dishes, but the oil stayed its original color. Sometimes kitchen experiments don’t go as expected, but that’s all part of the fun, right? Even if the visual didn’t come through, it was still a cool experience to try something new.

How to serve
Even though the oil didn’t turn blue, it’s still perfect for using in your regular dishes. The lack of color doesn’t take away from the creativity and general flavor oil brings. So, serve it up as a tasty, superfood-inspired finishing touch, even if it didn’t become the vibrant blue we imagined! But if you really want to experience the vibrant color of blue spirulina powder, you’ve got to try it in these White Chocolate Cookies with Blue Spirulina Butter Cream Frosting!

How to store
Store your spirulina oil in a clean glass bottle, and keep it in a cool, dark place like your pantry. It’ll stay fresh for about two weeks.

  • Yield: 1 cup / 250 ml 1x

Description

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

  • medium-sized saucepan
  • whisk
  • a bowl which the medium saucepan fits into
  • two medium-sized bowls
  • two fine mesh strainers
  • sealable container (oil bottle)
  • ice cubes

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tsp blue spirulina powder
  • 250 milliliters oil sunflower oil

Instructions

  1. Put the blue spirulina powder into the pot as well as the oil.
  2. Heat it over medium heat to a temperature of about 100°C (212°F), and maintain this temperature for the next 5 minutes. Stir occasionally, making sure the temperature remains steady and nothing gets burned.
  3. Prepare a bowl large enough to fit a medium-sized pot, and fill it with cold water and a handful of ice cubes. Also, hang a fine mesh strainer over one medium-sized bowl.
  4. Now, place the pot in the ice water and stir to cool the oil quickly. Pour the oil into the prepared fine mesh strainer to catch the coarse particles.
  5. Then, pour the oil into the second sieve, which is equipped with a coffee filter, to catch the remaining finer particles.
  6. Once all the oil has passed through the coffee filter, transfer the collected amount of oil into a sealable container or directly into an oil bottle.
